(This appeared in the Hindu,Madurai Edition dated 23/1/09.)

Fest Music lovers enjoyed a variety fare as eminent artists performed during the 57th anniversary of Sri Satguru Sangeeta Samajam, Madurai.

Rajalakshmi Padmanabhan

Excellent alapanas

Gayatri Girish, on the second day, brought out the inbuilt rhythm in ‘Swagatham Krishna’ that followed the soothing strains of ‘Nadasudha Rasa’ (Tyagaraja) in Arabhi. The chords of Akkarai Subbulakshmi’s violin blended well with Gayatri’s vocal chords, to produce excellent alapanas in Purvi Kalyani and Khambodi. Palladam Ravi and Adambakkam K. Shankar made creative contributions on the mridangam and ghatam respectively. The tukkadas were exclusively on Lord Krishna, including ‘Kakkai Chiraginile,’ ‘Katrinile Varum Geetam’ and ‘Kunidadi Krishna.’

Mam, I just had a look at the songs you rendered in Madurai [Samajam]. Any reason not to sing a krithi on Lord Sundareswara? Just wondering.

Plus, Adhirum Kazhal Panindu and Thamarumamaru [Hamir Kalyani] are two beautiful Thirupugazh's on the deities in Thiruparamkundram and Azhagar Koil respectively. I wam eagerly waiting for atleast ONE artist to sing Thamarumamaru for ages. Maybe you can help me out :)

Being from Madurai I just had to pass my comments. Hope you don't take any offense.

Thanks and regards.

Hi Mahesh,
Good observation :-)

This is the first time in many years that I have not sung any kriti on Lord Sundareswara in a Madurai concert.:-)

In this particular concert at the Samajam, saravanabhava(pasupathipriya) and kAdi mOdi (tiruppugazh) were audience requests..(from someone who had attended my concert in Chennai during the 2008 music season and where I had sung these.)

On earlier occasions, in concerts at the Samajam, Ragapriya and Sruti Arts Academy in Madurai, I have sung quite a few on sundareshwara and meenAkshi (kritis other than meenAkshi mEmudam, which is very commonly sung in Madurai).

In fact, I have always made it a point to include azhwAr pAsurams at vaishnavaite sthalams, tevaram hymns and tiruppugazhs, in my outstation concerts, on deities composed in temples in those respective towns or nearby ones.(I love learning such new ones to suit the place and occasion..)

A few examples sung on earlier occasions that immediately come to my mind now: kumudavAykkani(tiruppugazh-tirucchirApalli),sambandar and appar tevAram on the tiruvAnaikkA akhilAndEshwari deity sung at a concert in Trichy, kanakasabhai mEvum(tiruppugazh-chidambaram) sung at chidambaram,tAmarayin mattu(vayalUr) sung at vayalUr,anjana vElvizhi(thanjAvUr) sung at thanjAvUr.

Interestingly, both the tiruppugazh hymns that you have mentioned were among the exhaustive list that I had prepared while planning on the arupadai veedu audio album that I did for Charsur. Then we had to shortlist the various items, to accomodate various composers.

I will remember to sing these tiruppugazh hymns the next time I visit Madurai :-)

Hi,
Forgot to mention in previous reply that
tAmarayin mattu(vayalUr) sung at vayalUr and anjana vElvizhi(thanjAvUr) sung at thanjAvUr are tiruppugazh hymns. The sambandar tEvAram that I sang once at Trichy on the tiruvAnaikka deity was vAnaikkAvil veNmathi in paN koushikam (rAgam bhairavi).

Thank you very much for your detailed reply!!

Yes Meenakshi Memudam has been dealt so many times. Sundareeswaruni, Kadambari Priyayi and various thevarams come to mind. Bet you have 100s coming to your mind as soon as you read this!!

Interesting you mention Kanakasabai which I just humming yesterday :) The Thirupugazh's taught to me by Grandma were tuned by someone called Tirupugazh Thyagarajan [they had a group that met every Tuesday in Meenakshi Amman temple or so the legend goes :)]. Kanakasabai mevum is tuned in Vijayanagari. What is the raga you sing it in?

Thanks again for taking your time to respond.

Mahesh

Hi again,

I tried to look for the Charsur video [arupadai veedu audio album] you mentioned but I can't seem to find it. Is it in production still? Am much interested in buying it.

Thanks

Mahesh

Hi,

The album "Aarupadai Ksetra" was released by Charsur in the year 2007. It is very much in production and should be available at all audio stores.

Alternatively, you can place an order for the audio CD online from Charsur or pay online for the album download.

Let me know when you get a copy.

Regards,
Gayathri
