Sankar,
:-)
I use the anjal (அஞ்சல்) tool to enter text in Tamizh.
Priya,
Henceforth for the songs that I enter text in Tamil, I shall also give the English version.
For this song, Sankar has anyway done the needful:-)
Gayathri
Jeeva,
saw this in Dr.Shivakumar's page :
"A:
O Shiva, the lord who wears ("aninda") a crescent moon ("ambuli") on his forehead and the river ganga ("gangai") on his matted hair ("jataadharan"). You fulfill the desires ("manam valar") of those you worship you with love ("anbar"). O Shambhu! O Kapali! "
i too thought it was "Kavar" till now. ( how the devotee is in all awe at the resplendence of Lord Shiva).
For "ilam ":
i think "Thalam" makes a better fit to convey, "When they come to the shrine ( sthalam / thalam varumpozhudhu ...)".
For the meaning, i thought it meant :
"
once a person realises " onrume Payan-illai", he/she will accept your presence ( "Undenbar" )"
But looks like Papanasam Sivam has a more profound meaning to it :
"
C:
Those who realize ("uNarnda") that there is nothing ("illai") created in the universe ("onrume payan") but you will subsequently ("pinbavar") reach you ("uNDenbAr")."
How does Undenbar translate to "reach you" ?
Interpretations from Shivakumar's webpage on the "Thalam"part :
"
Every ("ovvoru") person ("manidanum") will have to leave ("eiduadurudi") this state of life ("in-nilai") one day ("oru nAL"), but they forget ("marandAr") this universal truth ("idai").
On that day ("anru"), the time ("-pozhudu") when their body and speech ("sheyal azhindala") will cease to function ("maru-"), they will not be able ("vArAdE") to invoke your name ("Shivan Peyar") on their tongue ("nAvil").
Therefore in preparation for that eventuality ("AdalinAl "), O Mind ("manamE"), start now itself ("inrE") getting into the habit ("pazhakku") of constantly chanting ("shollip ") the name ("nAmam") of Shiva, with love ("anbudan")."
the song appears so short and simple and is in our very own Tamizh - even to understand that we depend on interpretations !! hmmm ... interesting :)
Shankar,
Good to see your reference.
Yes, thalam (தலம்) also makes sense.
But, செயலிழந்து+தலம் : இரண்டும் சேர்ந்து ஒரு வார்த்தை ஆகாது என நினைக்கிறேன்.
Having said that, my interpretation of ilam(இலம்) is also wrong. Because,
செயலிழந்து+இலம்=செயலிழந்திலம், And the word there is rather செயலிழந்தலம்.
Then i looked up tamil lexicon, for a possible meaning for alam 'அலம்', and one of the meaning that word has is 'துன்பம்'(misery;distress), which seems to fit in even better!
>>How does Undenbar translate to "reach you" ?<<
Undenbar : Possibly, "Will accept that, You are the ultimate Reality, and thus, will eventually reach you."
Good to see all the references :-).Keep them coming !
My take on this:
1."அன்பர் மனம் வளர்" is more apt as suggested above, than "அன்பர் மனம் கவர்", though both versions are sung.
(The lyrics in the printed book give only the former.)
2. The meaning should be split as செயலழிந்து + அலமரு பொழுது
"அலமரு" means to be highly distressed, perturbed, agitated. Noun is "அலமரல்".
I don't think "அலம்" will be a suitable way to split the word in this context, though it also means "agitation of mind".அலமரு should be sung as one word.
(P.S: I also verified on the same with Dr.Rukmini Ramani, daughter of Papanasam Sivan and she clarified this to me.)
Hope this was useful. :-)
Gayathri
>>அலமரல்<<
மனச்சுழற்சி, குழப்பம் என பொருள் தந்திருக்கிறார்கள்.
புதிய சொல்லாடலைக் கண்டு கொண்டேன்!
மிக்க நன்றி!
for the "nambikkettavar evarayyA" search phrase, your blog is at the top already !
also one of the pages that threw up, pointed to a review of your concert, which went like:
"
The hallmark of Gayathri’s style of singing is the exquisite blend of artistry and Bhakthi Bhava, a result of the traditional training that she has undergone since the age of six.
.........................Her pronunciations of words were very clear throughout the concert and this enabled the gathered rasikas to feel and enjoy the songs
The song `Nambi Kettavar Evarayya’ on Lord Siva in Hindolam was the best one of the concert as it was rendered with complete bhakti bhava and which had a lot of appreciation from the crowd."

Sankar,
Thanks for the link, came as a pleasant surprise to me !!
I can't forget this particular concert which has been reviewed- it was on December 21st, 2006. The organizers requested me the previous evening if I could sing since the artiste who was supposed to sing was indisposed due to a sore throat.
I agreed and there was another SOS call the same evening from Krishna Gana Sabha, asking if I could sing on 21st morning at their Sabha, again as a last minute replacement, since the artiste from Kerala could not come due to unavoidable circumstances.
I agreed to sing, since someone had to fill in and help out the artiste who was indisposed and the situation was definitely a desperate one.
So it was two shifts for me that day !!
Morning at Krishna Gana Sabha and evening at Vani Mahal(where I sang nambikettavar evarayyA, bAlagopAla etc).
Thanks Sankar, for giving me an opportunity to recollect this particular incident :-)
Gayathri
Gayathri,
hope u remember, you sang this song even in chembur fine arts in mumbai in december 2007, which i enjoyed a lot. it is a beautiful song and ur rendition was full of devotion. and all the best for all your future endeavours.
I am in USA and listen to your music in youtube whenever I drive interstate long distance. I like your nice voice. I do meditation regularly and I very clearly understand the deep meaning of Nambikettaver....... I have emailed this song to many in my circle to persuade them to start meditation. Non-meditators certainly will regret on their deathbed for having wasted their life and it is too late. Meditation is nothing but Shiva or Rama,or Jesus or Buddha or Allah nama chollipalagu.
